 International Outreach

Mannakin Theater and Dance is actively engaged in reaching out to new populations both at home and abroad. In July of 2017, Nathan Cottam was invited to Bulgaria in order to lead the dance aspect of a project that provided recreation to children of refugee families from Syria and Afghanistan. This project culminated in a performance of Prokofiev’s classic Peter and the Wolf, for family and camp staff. In April of 2018, Nathan worked with the Bulgarian State Agency for Refugees and Caritas International to initiate a second visit to the refugee camps in Bulgaria, this time opening the adventure to students from the United States.

The Mission of Cultivating Ballet Culture, the program at our en Avant School of Dance, is to bring the long-term benefits of high quality ballet training, studio community and regular performing opportunities to underserved youth and families by overcoming the persistent obstacles of cost and proximity.

Cultivating Ballet Culture serves the function of a private dance studio within underserved communities by contracting rental/lease space directly within target communities and soliciting donations and grants to subsidize tuition. Families pay 35% of market rate for opportunities that are qualitatively identical to those enjoyed by higher income families. Participants are never turned away due to a lack of funds and students can often walk to class from home or school.
